The five Maserati Brothers of Bologna started their motoring roots in the pioneer days with the oldest brother Carlo racing motorcycles and cars. They began to manufacture spark plugs during World War I, and dove in building race cars soon after the War. The first car to bear the Maserati family name was debuted in 1926, wearing Bologna's traditional symbol, the trident of Neptune, and winning the 1.5-liter class in the 1926 Targa Florio. In 1938, Officine Maserati was acquired by the large industrial group Orsi, keeping the three remaining brothers and successfully winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1939 and 1940.
The firm later ventured into building expensive road and sports cars, with the 3500 series becoming the mainstay of the line in coupe and convertible (spyder) versions. Ten years after the introduction of Maserati's first road car, it was this very model that effectively achieved the marque's transition from racing car to road car manufacturer. A total of 2,226 3500 GT coupes and convertibles were built between 1957 and 1964. The original concept for the car, devised by owner Adolfo Orsi and designer Giulio Alfieri, called for a fast GT that would be exciting to drive but also comfortable and practical for daily use. Maserati demonstrated exceptional attention to the customer and was a pioneer in making after-sales services a key marketing area. Many celebrity owners got behind the wheel of a 3500 GT, including Prince Rainier III of Monaco, the tenor Giuseppe di Stefano, actors Alberto Sordi, Tony Curtis, Stewart Granger, Rock Hudson and Anthony Quinn. Franco Cornacchi - a gentleman racing driver, who later became Maserati's representative in Milan, regularly drove 3500 GTs between Milan and Modena on the Autostrada del Sole, setting a toll-to-toll record of 39 minutes over approximately 160 km. Featuring a 3,485cc inline six-cylinder, the 3500 GT utilized a twin spark-plug ignition and produced 220 horsepower, enough to propel it to a maximum speed of 134 mph.
