1964 marked the beginning of a new era and a new market segment that was created by Ford's Mustang. With the unprecedented success, the chance to be showcased in front of thousands of race fans at the Indianapolis 500 race was yet another win for the Ford Motor Company.

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Ford marketing created an incentive contest for their dealers. The competition consisted of 'Checkered Flag' and 'Green Flag' contests that were based on sales performance prior to the April 17, 1964 launch of the Mustang. The top five performers in each district would be awarded a special Pace Car replica, based on their final standings.

When the program was complete, 190 of these replicas were produced. This particular example is one of the Pace Car replicas. All of these cars were special Pace Car White coupes (code 42), with white interiors featuring blue trim. They all are powered by the 260 cubic-inch V8 engine and equipped with power steering, back-up lights and an automatic transmission. Other special features include the blue racing stripe and 'Official Pace Car' decals along the sides. These cars also do not have outside rearview mirrors.

Discovered in a field in Virginia and purchased for $400, this Mustang was treated to a four-and-a-half year full restoration returning it to its former glory. It retains all of its original sheet metal and has received a Concours Gold award from the Mustang Club of America.
