- Dual overhead cams, 4 valves per cylinder
- 11.0:1 compression ratio
- Nikasil lined aluminum cylinder sleeves
- Nitrided 4130 forged steel alloy crankshaft
- manually selected array of sixteen multiport fuel injectors (8 or 16) with twin runners to each combustion chamber
- 405 horsepower @ 5800 RPM, 385 ft/lb torque
- Redline 7300 RPM
The transmission is a ZF-6 German designed six-speed, rated for 405 ft/lb of torque, originally designed for turbocharged version of LT-5.
Shocks/Suspension
- Bilstein electrically controlled SRC (originally designed in 1987 for the $250,000 Porsche 959
- All aircraft quality aluminum control arms and cross members
- Special 315/35 X17 Goodyear Eagle tires on rear with redesigned and wider rear quarter panels and bumpers.
The ZR-1 was conceived to answer the serious challenge of the World Class European Grand Touring cars of the 1970s and 1980s and to firmly re-stablish the Corvette as a serious competitor in the 'Supercar Class.' A ZR-1 broke the 50 year old 24 hour land speed record in 1989 running on a 7.5-mile track at Ft. Stockton, Texas. The car was stock except for special Goodyear racing tires and wheels and slightly modified front bumper. It carried a sixty gallon gas tank and 250 pounds of repair equipment (none of which was used). The average speed was 175.885 mph, with pit stop time averaged in. At the end of the 24 hour run, the throttle governor was removed and the ZR-1 was run for two victory laps at an average speed of 199.8 mph. Arguably, the ZR-1 was the most expensive and sophisticated production Corvette built for its time. In its first year of production, recorded sale prices of $120,000 were exceeded. Factory list price: $69,553.
