Plymouth created the outrageous Plymouth Superbird to lure Richard Petty back. When the powers that be refused to let Petty race a Dodge Daytona since he was a 'Plymouth Man,' he turned to Ford. The famous No. 43 would then briefly adorn the doors of a Petty Blue Talladega.
It didn't take long for fans to take notice and nearly 2,000 Superbirds were sold by Chrysler -Plymouth dealers nationwide. This unrestored example features the 440 cubic inch four -barrel V8 with 375 horsepower backed by a column shifted Torqueflite automatic transmission, certainly enough to instill fear in any potential takers.
Purchased by the current owner's father in October 1972 for $1,620, this Limelight Superbird is essentially an unrestored original with minimal light cosmetic work. After owning a variety of Model A Fords and other collectible cars, he decided he wanted a newer car that might be considered collectible in the future. When the original owner tried to trade it in due to the excessive cost of insurance, the dealer turned him away. A relative heard of his dilemma and took his number, giving it to the current owner's father who purchased the car and preserved it for many years.
Today, the car is owned by the individual who oversees the Daytona-Superbird Club that has been serving the hobby since 1975. The owner is also the current owner/caretaker of the original Ramo Stott Superbird.
