Convertible
Pontiac's first Bonnevilles (named for the famous Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah) were bubble-topped 1954 GM Motorama concept cars, and its first road-going Bonneville was a very expensive high-performance, luxury-loaded version of a 1957 Star Chief convertible. Only 630 were produced that year, but the name graced top-level 300-horsepower 370 CID V8-powered two-door hardtops and convertibles for 1958, and a full-top-line series the following year.

Built on GM's longer wheelbase full-size B-Body architecture, Bonneville remained Pontiac's most luxurious model line through the 1960s and played a major role in elevating the division to third place in U.S. sales from 1962 to 1970. They typically offered more powerful standard V8s, standard automatic transmissions, plusher interiors and more standard and optional features than other full-size Pontiacs, with optional engines including Tri-Power (three two-barrel carburetors) 389 and 421 CID V8s. And for 1962, some were ordered with the 405 -horsepower 421 CID twin-four-barrel Super Duty V8.

The current owner spotted this triple-black Steve Brody-restored beauty at the Chicago Muscle Car Show in 2011, and again in 2012, and bought it there that year. Its meticulous restoration had begun with a total disassembly in 2005, and every piece was rebuilt, reconditioned, replaced by NOS parts or (in some cases) fabricated to be both flawless and period correct. Just 21,528 1962 Bonneville Convertibles were built, 1,874 with manual transmissions, 1,500 of those with the 421 CID V8 and very few of those with this car's three two-barrel carbs.
