Developed for the 1957-58 season, the 250 Testa Rossa was designed for both Scuderia Ferrari and for private entrants. Ferrari used the overhead-cam 3-liter V12 engine that powered the 250 GT Berlinetta in the Tour de France. Along with 0666, this car (0704TR), the second prototype finished, was a development 'mule' for the 250TR project. Sergio Scaglietti designed the pontoon bodywork, featuring the trademark Testa Rossa nose with cutaway sponsons.
First entered by Ferrari in the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour race, driven by Olivier Gendebien and Maurice Trintignant, it later raced at the 12 Hours of Sebring, driven by Phil Hill and Peter Collins. In 1958 it was sold to John von Neumann and campaigned successfully until donated to the Ford Dearborn Museum in 1961. It has recently been sold for a record price, making it the most valuable car ever to be sold by a dealer. It is the only Testa Rossa to remain unrestored with its original engine, gearbox and bodywork.
