One of the great British marques, Lagonda was founded by American Wilbur Gunn who initially built motorcycles, then three-wheelers, and graduated to four-wheeled machines in 1910. During the 1920s and 1930s, Lagonda made a name for itself at Le Mans and Brooklands. Successful models included the powerful M45 and later LG45, 4.5-liter sports and touring cars. When W.O. Bentley sold his company to Rolls-Royce he joined Lagonda as chief engineer and designed his V12 masterpiece that is at the heart of the Lagonda Rapide.
This V12 Drophead Coupe features a sporty, four-seat convertible body made by Lagonda's in-house coachbuilding division. After several owners in the United Kingdom, it was taken to Australia in 1969 before its next owner brought it to the United States in 2006.
This is one of the last V-12 Rapides made. In fact, it is the chassis numbered right after the two Le Man's cars in June of 1939. The Le Mans cars went on to finish third and fourth in their first outing. W. O. Bentley controlled their speed as this was to be a test outing before the full effort in 1940. WWII prevented that race from happening. As with race cars, this chassis is equipped with four carburetors, lightened brake drums and possibly Le Man's specification heads. The magnificent V-12 that powers this car is often referred to as W.O. Bentley's masterpiece. History accounts for 17 Rapide chassis which were produced by the factory, of which three or four had coachwork by outside builders. The in-house bodies, therefore, number either 13 or 14, all of which are still accounted for.
