1940 Tatra T87 Aerodynamic Saloon

In 1930, Hans Ledwinka and Erich Ubelacker began work on a new Tatra prototype - the V570, which incorporated swing axles and a rear-mounted, air-cooled engine. The radically streamlined bodywork was influenced by the aerodynamic research of Paul Jaray. From this, in March 1934, the T77 was introduced, and it is often cited as the first production car designed using aerodynamic principles. Its successor, the T87, was simpler, sportier, and relatively more affordable, with a shorter wheelbase. With its monocoque construction, the T87 still offered comfortable seating for six in a quiet passenger cabin complete with Bauhaus-style seating. The air-cooled, magnesium alloy V8 engine was also upgraded from the T77; it had hemispherical combustion chambers and a single overhead camshaft per cylinder bank.

This T87 is one of many delivered to officers of the German occupation forces in Czechoslovakia in May of 1940.
