Mercedes-Benz introduced a roadster version of the 300 SL at the 1957 Geneva Auto Show. It effectively replaced the gullwing coupe retired that year. At $11,000, it was more expensive than the outgoing coupe but it benefited from a host of upgrades. The open two-seater was closely related to the coupe, but had a modified tube frame, conventional doors and roll-up windows. Power went up slightly and the swing-axle rear suspension was modified to improve handling. A popular option was the snug hardtop, as fitted to this example. The most notable changes during production were the introduction of four-wheel disc brakes in 1961 and an aluminum engine block at the end of 1962. By the time the 300SL roadster was discontinued in 1963, 1,858 had been built.
