1910 Fiat S61 Grand Prix Racer

  • Chassis Number: 9124
By 1910, Fiat was already the largest automotive company in Italy.

This Fiat 61 racing car was designed and built in September 1910, and then raced in the United States from 1911 until 1914. The S61 has a powerful 10-liter, 4-cylinder, twin-plug engine and could easily achieve over 100 mph. In 1910, three Fiat S61s were brought to the states, and all three started in the Grand Prix at Savannah, including this car which was driven by Ralph De Palma. All three followed the Corsa Americana specifications, with a wheelbase 15 inches shorter than the normal Corsa configuration and most of the components drilled to reduce weight. None of the cars finished the race and this car, driven by Ralph De Palma, broke a cylinder just two laps from the checkered flag. This was the second race of the Automobiles Club of America's American Grand Prix.

Eventually, this S61 was sold to F.E. Hewlett, a Harvard-educated lawyer, promoter, and playboy. Starting in 1911, Hewlett campaigned the car at scores of national events driven by world-renowned drivers, including the 1912 Vanderbilt Cup. Also in 1912, it was driven by Teddy Tetzlaff to victory at the Santa Monica Grand Prix and it then went on to race at Santa Monica, Tacoma, Elgin and Milwaukee. Two S61s also ran at the Indianapolis 500 in 1911. The Fiat S61's most famous win was in 1911 when Victor Hemery won the Grand Prix de France at the Circuit de la Sarthe outside the town of Le Mans.

In recognition of this Fiat S61's spectacular race history, the current owner of this Fiat has had the car restored to the exact livery worn at the 1910 Savannah Road Race.
