This Maserati was the third Maserati ordered by Briggs Cunningham for the use of his friend and team driver Bill Spear and Sherwood Johnston in the 1955 Sebring 12 Hours race. The pair won third overall in the brand new Maserati behind the second-placed Phil Hill/Carroll Shelby in their Ferrari 750 Monza and the winning Mike Hawthorn/Phil Walters in their Jaguar D-Type. Following this very successful racing debut, big, burly Bill Spear then campaigned this car in a selective program of Sports Car Club of America events. After a few more owners in the United States, the well-preserved Maserati was acquired by leading German Maseratisto Dr. Thomas Bscher in 1986. Its current owner recently acquired this historic Maserati. The 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance was the first time it had been back in the United States in nearly 30 years.
