1936 Fiat Balilla 508 Navigation
This 1936 Fiat Balilla was purchased new in Italy by a doctor who subsequently moved to Ethiopia to escape World War II. Eventually, he moved to New York City and sold the Fiat to a Texan, who drove the car until 1972, when it blew a head gasket. Not being able to find a gasket, the car went into storage.
The current owner found the car and put it back in driving condition - but did not restore it. It retains what is believed to be its original paint and interior.
The motor is a 966cc inline four-cylinder with side valves, developing 20-24 horsepower. The transmission was four speeds forward, plus reverse.
According to the Balilla Registry in Torino, Italy, of the 200,000 cars built in Italy, France and Czechoslovakia, most were destroyed in World War II. Of the 15 known Spider body styles known to exist today only three were built in Italy. This is one of those three.
