This A-Series 911S is a long-wheelbase car that topped the range in 1969 and was built by R Gruppe co-founder Cris Huergas and so can be considered as the club's poster child. The invitation-only 'hot rod' club focuses on the 1963-73, 0-Series through F-Series, air-cooled, 2- through 2.4-liter cars (in 1973 the Carrera RS carried the 2.7-liter motor and thus is the car to emulate).
Acquired by R Gruppe co-founder Cris Huergas of Alameda, California in May 1992, this 1969 911 S was sound but tired. Huergas then met 911 enthusiast Ernie Wilberg who gave him a copy of the factory Sports Purpose manual for modifying 911s to FIA Group 2 race specifications. Huergas soon realized that he could modify his 911S this was so he sourced parts but left the 2.0-liter, high-compression, 180-horsepower engine untouched. In August 1995 his Sports Purpose car debuted at Concorso Italiano and was subsequently featured in the April 1998 issue of Excellence magazine. Freeman Thomas took a strong interest in the article and contacted Huergas about his own 1969 911 E. The two of them finally met at the Monterey Historics in August 1998, forming the R Gruppe in May 1999. The club has a 300 members limit even though it has the potential to grow much bigger.
