1983 Porsche 944 Coupe

1983 was the second year for the 944, a huge development of the preceding 924. The 924 ran alongside the 944 to be dropped in 1988. The 1983 944 production reached 14,633 units of which 9127 came to the USA - 16 were 944 Callaway Turbos that year, the factory Turbo not arriving until 1985; the current owner is the original owner of this example. For the 944 Porsche re-worked the VW/Audi 924 chassis but replaced its VW-sourced motor with their own water-cooled, over square, in-line four of 2.5-liters - effectively half a 928 V8 - smoothed by two counter-rotating balance shafts. The result was a stable, fast, semi-luxury front-engine sports tour de force.
