1997 Ferrari 310B F1 Navigation
Introduced in time for the Belgian Grand Prix, chassis 179 would be the first of two lighter-specification chassis. Weight removed from the car enabled this particular example to carry a little more fuel than the other F310Bs that had seen the team through the first half of the season.
Seeing that just one had been built, Schumacher would be given the first opportunity to drive 179. It would not be a match made in heaven as Michael had grown accustomed to the previous iteration of the car. Therefore, the new car would sit in the garage unused over the course of the race weekend.
Chassis 179 would see competition, but at the hands of Eddie Irvine. The car would finish 8th at the Italian Grand Prix and would continue to perform well over the remaining races on the calendar. However, it would not be 179 that would be involved in the epic battle with Jacques Villeneuve's Williams at Jerez. Schumacher would be disqualified from the championship and chassis 179 would go on to a rather quiet life back at the Ferrari factory.
Chassis 179 would be let go from the factory in 1999 and would make its way through to a number of collections since that day. In 2000, the car would take part in a number of historic motor racing events and would even make an appearance at Laguna Seca in 2004. Granted Ferrari Classiche certification, the car would also be granted permission to be part of Ferrari's F1 Clienti Program.
Built during the 50th year celebration of Ferrari, driven by Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine and during a season in which Ferrari came extremely close to having yet another World Champion, chassis 179 is by no means an insignificant piece of Ferrari history. From the intricate steering wheel, to the high-revving V10 sound and a connection to the legendary Michael Schumacher, chassis 179 provides an experience few could ever express in words.
Made available for sale at the 2014 RM Auctions event in Monterey, the 1997 Ferrari F310B, chassis 179, would sell for $825,000.By Jeremy McMullen
