1966 Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 Spider

  • Chassis Number: 0577
  • Engine Number: 0524
  • Body Number: 18988
Ferruccio Lamborghini produced tractors and air conditioners before moving into production of grand touring cars allegedly having an argument with Enzo Ferrari regarding his own 250 GT. The company's first prototype, the 350 GTV, made its introduction at the Turin Auto Show in November 1963, and it showed Ferruccio that his vehicles could be successful. The production 350 GT was introduced at Geneva the following year, retaining the show car's design and backed up by exceptional performance and attractive styling. Carrozzeria Touring of Milan was responsible for its design. Top speed was in the neighborhood of 150 mph, thanks to the engineering genius of Giotto Bizzarrini.

The 400 GT 2+2 followed in 1966 and it retained the same style of its predecessor, but nearly every panel had been revised, with the most noticeable change being the four headlamps. More interior room for passengers was created by lowering the floor pan and raising the roof. The suspension was also revised. In the front, the V-12 engine was enlarged from 3.5 liters to 4.0, raising horsepower to 320. In total, just 247 examples were produced over two years' time.

This particular Lamborghini 400 GT 2+2 was originally a coupe finished in Grigio Argento over a Nero leather interior. It was delivered to Lambrocar, the official Lamborghini dealer in Milan, Italy, in July 1966, and from there, it was subsequently delivered to its first owner, Dr. Mariano Delle Piane. Peter Wolofsky, of Hallandale, Florida owned the car in the early 1990s. It is believed that its conversion to Spyder configuration was carried out during Wolofsky's ownership, making it one of just two 400 GTs converted by him. During the conversion, it received a minor restoration, with the exterior being painted in silver-blue metallic and the interior being re-trimmed in light grey, and the car being fitted with new wire wheels. After the conversion was completed, the car was sold to the Auto Toy Store, of Fort Lauderdale, towards the end of 1993.

Bob Pond purchased the car in May of 1994 from the Auto Toy Store. The car has been apart of his collection for over 20 years and it has travelled less than 1,000 kilometers in that time.
