The Lancia Aurelia, the first car ever to employ a V6 engine, was introduced at the 1950 Turin Motor Show. The 1,754cc 60-degree V6 was designed in wartime by Francesco de Virgilio. The engine was constructed from aluminum and used overhead values operated via short pushrods instead of Lancia's traditional overhead camshafts. The chassis used an advanced unitary construction design, but retained Lancia's 'sliding pillar' independent front suspension, first seen on the Lambda, but used a semi-trailing-arm layout at the rear, another world first. The transmission was comprised of a two-piece prop-shaft and combined gearbox/rear transaxle on which were mounted the inboard brakes.
The B10 saloon was joined the following year by the Pinin Farina-styled B20 Coupe, a fastback 2+2 on a shortened wheelbase. The Aurelia engine was increased to 1991cc in 1951 and would provide the power for the B20. With lighter and higher gearing than the saloon, the B20 was capable of a top speed of over 100 mph. The 3rd and subsequent series B20s were introduced in 1953 and powered by a 2451cc, 118 horsepower version of the pushrod V6. The 4th-series cars had a DeDion rear suspension setup instead of the original semi-trailing arm arrangement.
This particular example is a 4th Series B20 GT that has both an intriguing Italian ownership history and uprated performance specification by Enrico Nardi's famed firm. It is equipped with a full complement of period Nardi performance equipment. Desirable upgrades include twin Weber carburetors with Nardi cast air cleaner and manifold, floor shift conversion, and hood scoop. The car rides on Borrani wire wheels more commonly seen on Aurelia Spiders. Up front, there are original Carello headlamp lenses.
It is believed that this car remained in Italy its entire life until being export to the United States in 2011. During the 1960s, it resided with a Mr. Romano Zangrossi in Padova, Italy and was registered on Padova license plates. The Lancia appears to have had a few subsequent Italian owners, culminating in Dario Luraghi, reportedly the son of Giuseppe Luraghi, the president of Alfa Romeo from 1960 to 1974.
Timothy Mullens of North Carolina had the car brought to the United States, before being sold to the current California owner. In 2012, the B20 received a new clutch, motor mounts, and other service items. An assortment of tools, a jack, and a neatly fitted spare tire cover in the trunk round out the Aurelia's presentation. The 2,451cc overhead valve V6 engine is fitted with 2 Weber carburetors and offers approximately 135 horsepower. There is a four-speed manual transmission and four-wheel drum brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2014
