In the late 1950s, the Lincoln models had become chrome-heavy luxury cars and the largest automobiles available to American consumers. For the four-generation of the series, Ford decided the Lincoln would become lighter. The 1961 Continental was given a completely new design, based on the 1958 Thunderbird, but with two additional doors, as mandated by Ford President Robert S. McNamara. The design was courtesy of veteran stylist Elwood Engel who created one of the most influential designs of the 1960s. The result was a new and smaller vehicle that was offered as a four-door hardtop sedan and a four-door convertible resting on a 123-inch wheelbase, over a foot shorter than the 1960 Continental. Both body styles featured 'suicide' rear doors, greatly improving entry and departure for back-seat passengers. When the driver pulled a T-handle, the rear-hinged trunk lid and a smaller extension panel was opened, the top was folded and retracted, and stored in the luggage bay. The entire process took less than a minute.
The Continentals featured modern and minimalistic styling. They still had huge fins and boasted better build quality than their predecessors. Each example was subjected to a 12-mile test drive before leaving the factory in Wixom, Michigan. They were also the first American automobile to carry a 24,000 mile/two-year bumper-to-bumper warranty.
The Industrial Design Institute honored the Lincoln Continental with a special bronze medal.
This particular example has been in the care of the family of its original owner, Paul 'Red' Fay, since new. When Mr. Fray passed away in 2009, the car was put into storage. It was revived a few years later and returned to proper running condition. Currently, the car appears in its original colors of Metallic Green with a red leather interior and white folding top with a black lining. It is equipped with all standard features and options. The engine is a 430 cubic-inch overhead valve V-8 unit fitted with a single Carter two-barrel carburetor and offering 320 horsepower. There is a three-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drum brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Nov 2014
