Alfa Romeo's first new design after World War II was not introduced until 1950, with the introduction of the 1900, a unit-body sedan with a twin overhead cam 1884cc four-cylinder engine. This was also the first Alfa Romeo built on a real production line, as all the previous vehicles had been largely hand-built. These were also the first Alfas with left-hand drive.
In 1958, Alfa Romeo introduced a new sedan which had a larger 1975cc engine, and dubbed the 2000. The lineup included a Touring-built 2000 Spider, and a 2000 Sprint Coupe bodied by Bertone. Spider and Sprint production comprised nearly half of all 2000 sales. In total, 3,443 examples of the Spider were built along with 700 of the Sprint Coupe. The 2000 sedan models were given a column-mounted shifter for its five-speed transmission, while the Spider and Sprint had a floor-mounted gear shift.
The 1975cc engine found in the Alfa 2000 featured duplex-chain driven twin overhead camshafts, hemispherical combustion chambers, and a pair of side-draft Solex carburetors. In this guise, the engine delivered 131 horsepower. The five-speed transmission was fully-synchronized and at all four corners were large Alfin drum brakes.
This particular Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider appears to have been completed on the 9th of September, 1960, and sold to Hoffman Motor Company in New York City on August 22nd the following year. The Touring Spider was finished in Alfa Red. It is believed to have resided in the Northeast since new. By the early 1990s, the car was owned by a Mr. Muramoto of Dayton, Ohio, and the Alfa is subsequently reported to have remained in the state of Ohio though 2009. Most recently, the car has had a Pennsylvania owner.
Currently, the exterior of the car is as it was originally delivered, however a white racing stripe has been added across the cowl. The Spider is fitted with a black convertible top and a matching black interior.By Daniel Vaughan | Feb 2015
