The Ferrari 312T is an evolution of the 312B3 from 1974. In various versions it was used from 1975 until 1980. It was an uncomplicated and clean design by Mauro Forghieri which responded well to mechanical upgrades. The 312T series won 27 races, four constructors' and three drivers' championships. The 1975 cars featured a large number of new design changes, the most interesting of which was the transverse mounted gearbox - the T in the car's name stood for Transversal. The gearbox design allowed it to be positioned ahead of the rear axle, in order to give a low polar moment of inertia for improved cornering. Exotic materials such as titanium and magnesium are used throughout the car to help lower the weight. The front of the chassis is much narrower to improve airflow around the car and into the radiators. Power was from a flat-12, 510 horsepower engine.
This 312 T was built for the 1975 Grand Prix season and was driven throughout the year by either Niki Lauda or Clay Regazzoni depending on the race. Its first Grand Prix win came with Lauda at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone in April, and Lauda won again at the French Grand Prix two months later. The car's last competitive race was the 1976 South African Grand Prix, with Regazzoni at the wheel. A total of five 312 Ts were built by Ferrari, and all have survived and are often used on the track.
