In January 1996, BMW launched the Z3 roadster at the Detroit Motor Show. It was the first automobile model manufactured exclusively aboard (at the Spartanburg plant) by BMW. The two-seater had already received popular acclaim through its spectacular appearance in the James Bond film 'Golden Eye.' It was the first time a vehicle was launched in the booming market for open-top two-seaters. The BMW Z3 1.8 roadster was the entry-level model and was powered by the familiar 4-cylinder engine generating 115 horsepower.
