Mercedes-Benz introduced their 300 model in 1952 and infused it with modern engineering and performance along with classic build quality. They were given the latest materials and technology to achieve the greatest amount of power and the least amount of weight. The 300 S were built upon the top-range 300 series chassis and were priced nearly 50 percent higher than its counterparts. Power was from a 2996 cubic centimeter engine fitted with triple Solex carburetors and producing 150 horsepower.
Just 141 examples of the 300 S Roadster were produced.
This particular example was sold in the United States as a 1954 model. It was delivered to the West Coast distributor in Ventura, California, on June 22, 1954. It is believed that this was the second 300 S off the line in 1954. During that year, just 54 Roadsters were built. This example is fitted with a rare Becker Nurburg radio.
The car later ended up in Chicago where it is believed to have spent around 2 decades in a garage. When the current owner acquired the car, it had been painted white and been given a new top. The new owner had the engine restored. The color was matched to the Mercedes-Benz Silver, with the outer body panels being removed and the body taken apart as far as possible. The original seats remain in the car. The chrome trim is in good original condition as well.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2015
