The Lamborghini Espada was given styling by Bertone's Marcello Gandini and took inspiration from his Marzal- and Jaguar-based Pirana show cars of 1966. This ultimate GT car was launched at the 1968 Geneva Auto Show and was a true four-seater. Power was from a high-revving 4-liter, four-cam V-12 mounted in the front. Top speed was achieved around 150 mph.
Production of the Espada lasted from 1968 through 1978 with just 1,217 examples produced in total, including 456 of the Series III models.
The Lamborghini Espada Series III is fitted with leather upholstery, power windows, power steering, air conditioning, tinted glass and a heated rear window. It also has a wraparound dash. This is an early Series III car and does not have the heavy black bumpers which were added soon after to meet U.S. safety regulations. Instead, it has early thin chrome bumpers. It rides on original Campagnolo wheels accompanied by Pirelli tires.
The original owner sold the car in 1991. Ownership again changed in 2002 and 2010, with a color change to period-appropriate Light Metallic Green executed prior to its 2002 sale. This car has spent much of its life in California.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2015
