1974 Maserati Bora Navigation
Maserati chose the 1971 Geneva Salon to unveil their sensational new Bora. The supercar followed other manufacturer's designs by having a mid-engine layout while at the same time abandoning the traditional tubular chassis technology in favor of unitary construction. The Bora was named after an Adriatic wind and wore styling by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Ital Design, at least as far as its bodyshell was concerned. Mounted mid-ship was Maserati's four-cam V8 in 4.7-liter form. Mated to the engine was a five-speed transaxle sourced from ZF, and the all-independent double-wishbone suspension was penned by Giulio Alfieri, co-designer of the 250F Formula 1 Grand Prix car.
The Bora was one of the first 'new generation' models to appear after Maserati's acquisition by Citroen. The Bora was given Citroen's hydraulic technology to adjust seats and pedals, raise the headlamps and operate the power-assisted brakes.
The 310 BHP engine gave the car a top speed exceeding 160 mph.
By January of 1976, Maserati's management was discussing the option to discontinue the Bora but, later that year, decided to continue. It was then given an enlarged 4.9-liter V8 engine, and only 25 examples were made that year. Total production from 1971 to 1978 was only 564. Just 275 of the top-specification, 4.9-liter Boras were produced.
This example is a US-specification Bora 4.9 finished in black with an original Senape (Mustard) interior. It has its original books, tools, and a jack. The 4930cc dual overhead cam aluminum V-8 engine is fitted with four Weber 42 DCNF twin-choke carburetors and offers 330 horsepower.By Daniel Vaughan | May 2015
