In 1934, the Chevrolet pickup received new styling with smoother body contours and two-tone color combinations offered on many of the body styles. The front tie-bar which supported the headlights, was gone, giving the new pickup a contemporary appearance. They were offered in both standard and Deluxe models and powered by the same six-cylinder engine used the prior year - an overhead valve, 206.8 cubic-inch unit delivering 65 horsepower.
In 1937, several important updates were added to the Chevy truck, including an all-steel cab, smoother lines, and rounder fenders. The 207 CID six was replaced with a larger 216.5 CID overhead valve six-cylinder engine offering nearly 80 horsepower. A new 3/4 ton model was introduced mid-year, as well as a new one-ton series.
In the front was a grille that was comprised of thin vertical blades and flanked by torpedo-shaped headlights mounted on the side of the hood. On the side and located near the front, was a Chevrolet 'bow-tie' emblem on all models except the Carryall Suburban.
The 1/2-ton models rested on a wheelbase that measured 112 inches while the 3/4-ton and 1-ton models had a 122.25-inch platform. A three-speed manual transmission was standard except on the 1-ton which had a 4-speed, floor-mounted gearshift. The 1/2-ton models had a semi-floating rear axle while the others had a full-floating rear axle. Hydraulic drums were located at all four corners.
This example is a step-side pickup that was restored in 2004 and completed in late 2009. It has many original components including the exterior brightwork, front and rear bumpers, and the grille. The truck bed has been replaced with hand-hewn planed oak boards. It has the optional commercial suspension and differential. There is a swing-out front windshield and electric wiper. The truck is finished in Balboa Blue and Silver Metallic.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2015
