The Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company of South Bend, Indiana, was founded in 1852, making buckboards and other vehicles for farming, mining, and the military. They began making electric automobiles in 1902 and gasoline vehicles in 1904 in partnership with E-M-F and Garford. The first cars sold under the Studebaker name came in 1911.
The President model was Studebaker's top-of-the-line from 1926 to 1942. The nameplate was brought back in 1955 and used until 1958. In 1935 Studebaker produced 2,305 Presidents with a selling price of $1,529. They featured dual side mounts, a chrome radiator mascot, two exterior-mounted salon horns, and 2-foot hassocks in the rear compartment.
The 1935 model was the second year of the second generation of the President, and exhibited advanced styling for its time. The steeply sloped grille and rakish shape of the fenders and side body suggested this car was fully up-to-date. It produced 110 horsepower from its nine-bearing, straight-eight engine and set many speed records.
