'Total Performance' wasn't just a slogan, but the absolute desire to beat the competition. When Ford brought out its new line in 1962, the new XL option added horsepower. For all of the automobile companies, the horsepower race was on. In mid-1962, Ford released an even bigger engine: The 406, powered by 405 horses with triple two-barrel carburetion and a 4-speed manual transmission.
During the 1962 season, Ford realized that these lightweight models would help those in the competition scene. They decided to produce dealer-supplied parts to those interested in quarter mile racing. These cars marked the beginning of factory involvement and set off a race that hasn't stopped even today.
