1971 AMC Javelin Navigation
By 1971, the writing was on the wall for American muscle car manufacturers. Higher fuel prices and increasing insurance regulations meant owning a high-powered Pony Car would not be easy for the average young working man. American Motors would combine their Javelin and AMX models into a single all-new body style. For the first time, all Javelins and Javelin/AMX's would include a back seat.
The totally restyled 1971 American Motors Javelin was longer, lower, and wider than its predecessor. The Dick Teague-inspired design was unlike anything ever seen before, and quite bold. Front fender blisters and a molded in roof spoiler are several features that make it stand out.
As the 'underdog' in a burgeoning market, AMC knew they had to expand the option list to get their share of the market. A rather tame 304 cubic-inch engine would be offered, with 360 and 401 cubic inch engines offered for those desiring more than enough get-up-and-go. While this may have been a 'last gasp' effort, it certainly made a bold statement.
At the top of the performance ladder was the Javelin/AMX. Although possible to equip with the smaller engines, some people opted for the 'Go-Pack', along with the 401 cubic inch, creating a true-to-form, muscle Pony Car.
This Javelin/AMX is one of the earliest of the all-new models produced. Originally ordered as a 'Central Purchase' car, it was delivered directly to AMC headquarters in Southfield, Michigan and used as a corporate display vehicle.
This fine example was recently restored to as-new Concours condition after being found in extremely rough and rusty shape. It is equipped with the 401 cubic-inch engine, the high-performance Go-Pack, air conditioning, an AM-FM radio, and the plush corduroy bucket seat interior. It is finished in Mustard Yellow and nearly identical to the one featured in the brochure of the era. The owner saw one just like it when he ordered his first Javelin brand new. That image never left his mind, and four decades later he acquired this car from a friend.
