In June of 1985, Project 135 was started in Sant'Agata with a simple objective in mind: top speed to be in excess of 196 mph. It was to be the replacement of the Countach model and Marcello Gandini was once again asked to design the car for Lamborghini.
The car became known as the Diablo (devil in Spanish) and carried on the tradition of naming the cars after famous fighting bulls. The Diablo was introduced for sale to the public in 1990 and continued its first generation through 1998.
The car was updated in 1999 most noticeably by the elimination of the pop-up headlamps for fixed units. After Audi took over the company, they looked to modernize the car and refine it until the replacement Murcielago was ready. The VT 6.0 was a result of Audi's work and was launched in 2000 with an updated fascia including larger ducts hinting to the design of the upcoming Murcielago. This 6.0L V12 engine produces 549 horsepower and can propel the car above 200 mph.
The car is shown in dramatic Pearl Yellow.
