1979 Isuzu 117 Series 3 Fastback Coupe

With the major influx of imported cars into the United States in the late 1970s, this Isuzu 117 Coupe stands alone. Introduced in 1968, the 117 Series has a long list of features that are often credited to other cars. For example, the 117 was one of the first Japanese cars designed by an Italian. Giorgetto Giugiaro of Ital Design fame is credited with the styling. It was one of his first designs and also considered his first research project in his new capacity as Styling and Design Center Director at Ghia.

The Isuzu 117 is among the first Japanese cars to offer both dual overhead cams and electronic fuel injection as standard fare. Considered a cross between a station wagon, a coupe, and a sedan, they are often referred to as Gran Turismo 2-door fastback.

In 1973, working directly with General Motors, the Isuzu 117 would enjoy an increase in production to nearly ten times the previous year's total. In 1977 the 117 would undergo a facelift featuring square headlights and a sleeker overall appearance. It also has an extensive list of standard features, which includes a plush interior with leather seats inspired by concept cars of the day.

This 1979 Isuzu 117 Series 3 Coupe is a prime example of a rare Japanese four-seat fastback, seldom seen in the United States.
