Chevrolet's heritage dates to 1911 when businessman William 'Billy' Durant and racer Louis Chevrolet teamed to form the Chevrolet Motor Company. Fast forward five decades to 1963; a stunning new design is introduced. It was the first year for a Corvette coupe and featured a tapering rear deck and - for 1963 only - a split rear window.
Road racers certainly took notice. Chevrolet made sure that west coast hot shoes were among the first to receive Corvette coupes equipped with the special Z06 road racing package. Although offered through normal channels, these purpose-built coupes were equipped with the 360 horsepower, 327 fuel-injected engine, 4-speed transmission, posi-traction rear, a fiberglass 36.5-gallon fuel tank for long-distance endurance racing, special brakes, and five cast aluminum wheels with knock-off nuts. The Z06s enjoyed high-profile appearances in races across the country including several at famed Daytona. Mickey Thompson was also among this elite group of racers and he was hired to do tire testing using several Z06s.
Today, surviving Z06s are among the most sought-after of the second generation Corvette. This example was originally assigned to the Corvette development group under Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov and used as a powertrain development car for testing and evaluation of advanced engines. After a year and 1,375 miles, it was made available for employee purchase and a young engineer on the team bought it. He drove it daily for two years, then put it in storage.
