1922 Mercer Series 5 Navigation
Introduced in 1911, the Mercer 35 Raceabout was one of America's earliest sports cars, rivaled only by the similar Stutz Bearcat. In 1914 Erik H. Delling, a German-trained engineer, was hired to update the Raceabout's T-head engine with a more modern L-head 4-cylinder engine. The new Model 22-70 Raceabout had a much more civilized feel and appearance with more enclosed bodywork, a full windshield, an electric starter, and better lighting. Over the following few years, the Raceabout was improved and refined to be more comfortable and easier to drive. When Mercer produced its last vehicle in 1925, around 5,000 had been built.
This Series 5 Raceabout was previously owned by two of the car world's most discerning collectors, Dr. Samuel Scher and Richard C. Paine Jr., and it has recently been freshly restored by its new owner.
