The duPont behind the car was E. Paul, who had earlier worked in the family's munitions company. His factory wasn't initially in Wilmington, Delaware but in Moore, Pennsylvania where it remained until 1924 when assembly moved to Wilmington. E. Paul duPont bought the Indian Motorcycle Company in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1930 in order to be close to Merrimac, the coachbuilder who provided most duPont bodies. Model G duPonts used a Continental 114hp 322cid L-head in-line eight-cylinder engine for power.
Celebrities liked the duPont, too. Mary Pickford bought the original show car as a birthday present for her husband, Douglas Fairbanks. Jack Dempsey and Will Rogers bought their own. Huntington Hartford, whose A&P grocery chain was flourishing, was another purchaser.
This is the only known example of the Model G Waterhouse Roadster known to survive today. Waterhouse was best known for the luxurious Victoria bodies seen on many American marques but they created ten of these roadsters for duPont. This car was first sold to Charles List, a money manager from Los Angeles who managed to keep his wealth throughout the Great Depression - quite an achievement considering that an expensive roadster was not exactly a necessity. List treasured this car until the 1960s when he sold it to William Harrah, who in turn sold it to the California collector John Mozart. After the car was restored, Jerry Riegel, a member of the du Pont family, saw it and convinced his cousin W.K. du Pont to buy it. The previous owner acquired the car in 2011 and the current owner in 2021.
