1951 Cunningham C2 Navigation
The Cunningham C-2R was Briggs Cunningham's first serious assault on an outright win in the Le Mans 24 hour race. Sporting an aluminum body built by Bill Frick and Phil Walters (a.k.a. Ted Tappet of Frick Tappet Motors fame) over a tubular ladder chassis, it was fitted with the brand new Chrysler Hemi engine with a LaSalle 3-speed transmission. It had conventional front drum brakes from Cadillac, and double wishbone independent front suspension joined to a DeDion rear axle with inboard brake drums. The C2-Rs were fast and were timed at 154 mph on the Mulsanne straight. Sadly two of the three cars that entered at Le Mans in 1951 crashed, including this one, driven by Fred Wacker and George Rand. One C-2R finished in 18th place after being slowed by mechanical issues late in the race.
