1970 Mercedes-Benz C 111 Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz C-111 was a futuristic design study displayed by Mercedes-Benz in September 1969 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. Promoted as the successor to the 300SL Gullwing, several C-111s were built. The first of these was powered by the futuristic Wankel engine, which was then considered to be the long-term future of engine technology. It excelled in testing, achieving a top speed of around 162 mph. More powerful 4-rotor Wankel-engined cars followed, delivering speeds approaching 200 mph, and the C-111s set many regularity records. When building the prototype for the new C-111 in 1970, Mercedes-Benz engineers in Sindelfingen fitted the second-generation chassis with a 3.5-liter, V8 production engine to enable direct comparison to be made with the 4-rotor Wankel engine.
