George Barris built this 1951 Mercury convertible for Fred Rowe in 1953. The finished car appeared on the cover of Rod & Custom as the 'Mercury of the Month' in August of that year. Barris chopped the windshield and door glass by 4 inches and tastefully de-chromed the body. The car was lowered and a custom single-bar grille incorporating the stock parking lights was fitted. The front of the hood was flared out, the headlights were Frenched and a pair of 1950 Chrysler taillights were mounted in the rear fenders. Twin exhaust extensions ran through the rear bumper. Glen Houser built the non-folding custom padded top for this car and a rolled-and-pleated interior in gray and white leatherette was created. With the top removed, a custom tonneau cover hides the rear seat. Starlet Mamie Van Doren appeared with this car in the hot rod 'B-movie', Running Wild.
