1970 Dodge Challenger Convertible

This Dodge Challenger Convertible was number nine of 12 hand-built 'Promo Cars' off the line on the first day of production; that was August 12, 1969. Installed in the car were all 29 available options from the catalog to promote and entice potential buyers into becoming actual buyers. But, perhaps, more to the point is what's under the hood: a 440 cubic-inch, 390 horsepower Six Pack bolted to the heavy-duty (HD) 18-spline 'Hemi' Pistol Grip 4-speed transmission.

Dodge prepared for the introduction of its highly anticipated new 1970 Challenger by building 12 very special convertible examples for display at major industry events and at its top dealerships around the country. Officially designated by the factory as promotional models and to insure superior quality given their role, all 12 were built by hand off the line on the first day of production, August 12, 1969. To entice potential buyers, each car was equipped with all 29 available options, excluding air conditioning, and powered by the high-performance 440/390 horsepower Six Pack Engine, heavy duty 18-spline 'Hemi' Pistol Grip 4-speed transmission, and 4.10 Super Track Pack Dana 60 rear end.

This special Challenger is number 9 in the series of 12 and has undergone a no expense spared, four-and-a-half-year restoration using original equipment components. The work was performed by Michael Mancini. This is the only Promo Car restored to this caliber and is the only one thus far to receive a Mopar Nationals OE Certification, the highest award possible in the Chrysler show scene.

This car's pedigree is also exceptionally well documented with a factory broadcast sheet, two original fender tags, and a binder full of restoration photos, documentation, and receipts.

Chosen as Mopar Action's February 2008 cover car, this rare piece of Chrysler history was quoted as 'belonging in a museum.' Having traveled just 5 miles since its debut at the Mopar Nationals in August of 2008, the car has not been seen by the public since that award-winning appearance.
