1985 was the fourth year for the 944, a 'huge' development of the preceding 924. The 924 ran alongside the 944 to be dropped in 1988. The 1985 944 production reached 23,720 units of which 6167 came to the United States. For the 944, Porsche re-worked the Volkswagen/Audi 924 chassis but replaced its Volkswagen-sourced motor with their own water-cooled, over square, inline four of 2.5-liters - effectively half a 928 V8 - 'smoothed' by two counter-rotating balancer shafts. The result was a handsome, balanced, fast, semi-luxury front-engine sports car, a handling tour de force. A turbo arrived in the United States in 1986, and a Cabriolet in 1989. Development continued until the end, in 1991.
