1976 Lola T430

  • Chassis Number: HU1
Bought by Team VDS and raced by Peter Gethin in 1976 to top 10 finishes at Watkins Glen, Mid-Ohio and Road America. Warwick Brown raced the car for the remained of 1976 in the US. It competed in the 1977 and 1978 Rothmans International Series driven by Warrick Brown and Alan Hamilton finishing 1st or 2nd. It was nearly destroyed in the 1978 race in Sandown, Australia. The current caretaker acquired the car in the early 2000s and was treated to a full restoration. Since then, it has raced in mostly vintage race events in New Zealand and Australia.
Formula 5000 was an open wheel, single seater auto-racing formula that around in various regions around the world in different series from 1968 to 1982. When it began, it was intended as a low-cost series for open-wheel competition cars. It allowed for a maximum engine displacement size of 5 liters.

In the early 1970s, the series was in trouble in Europe due to the weak pound, the energy crisis, and the increasing cost of importing Chevrolet V8 engines. In 1976, the European Formula 5000 Championship moved into the Shellsport Group 8 Championship. This was a British-based series for Formula Atlantic, F500, F1, and F2 cars, and would form the basis for what was become the Aurora F1 Championship in 1978.

In the mid-1970s, the US version of F5000 was also in decline, even with the addition of team Theodore and VDS, the number of cars and teams were falling.

In 1976, the US F5000 series saw a vehicle other than a Lola win a race. Lola had certainly proven they were more than capable of building a reliable and competitive car, with Brian Redman winning the championship in a Lola T332 Chevrolet. This was Redman's third consecutive SCCA/USAC Formula 5000 Championship title win.

The Lola T430 chassis was based on the T360 Atlantic chassis. It had a similar suspension setup as the T332, a narrow tub, and twin side radiators. VDS raced two T430 chassis in the US with little success. Redman's Haas Racing used one for testing.

The VDS T430s later went to Australia where Warwick Brown piloted one to much success at the 1977 Australian Internationals. Another T430 driven by Alfredo Costanzo would later dominate the 1979 Rothmans series.

Three examples were built, and all three continue to race in New Zealand.
