The muscle cars of the late 1960s ruled the road, but as gasoline shortages, EPA restrictions, and safety concerns grew, manufacturers began offering lighter and smaller vehicles that were more fuel efficient and often more luxurious. In the super car world, they too felt the effects, and as speed limits were continually choked, their market continued to dry up. Although there was excitement for the Lamborghini Countach at the start of production, sales soon were reduced to a trickle. Development within Lamborghini stopped completely until the France-based Mimran Group intervened with offers of cash and a new business plan. The Mimran Group's success later attracted the interest of the Chrysler Corporation, and by the late 1980s the factory was once again busy, including an ambitious new ground-up Formula One program and engineering team headed by Ferrari's former chief engineer Mauro Forghieri.
Forghieri and his team made several modifications and refinements to the driveline and suspension to the aging Countach. The aerodynamics and aesthetics, however, remained an issue.
With the Company's 25th anniversary, Lamborghini saw an opportunity to impress their loyal following, and introduced an improved and final edition of the Countach. It featured a new front air dam and completely redesigned engine and cooling intakes which were now integrated into the body lines. It was given a redesigned rear bumper and new lower body work which integrated with the fender flares. Larger fans and repositioning the radiators offered improved and crucial cooling. The driveline, however, remained unchanged. New Pirelli Zero Asymmetrical tires rode on new OZ modular wheels.
This particular example was sold new at Prestige Imports in Miami, Florida. It is the 657 Countach 25th Anniversary Editions produced. Power is from a 455 horsepower V-12 engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. In 2009 it was given a new clutch and in 2014 it received an extensive engine service. The car has its original Rosso Siviglia paint, Ivory interior with Red piping and the original Pirelli tires and has been driven 10,565 kilometers since new.By Daniel Vaughan | Feb 2016
