1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Navigation
The Ferrari 275 GTB is generally divided into early (short-nose) and late (long-nose) cars. Since these mostly hand-built cars, improvements that were devised were often incorporated into production, often with the very next car. The longer nose design was introduced at the 1965 Paris Salon and was the result of front-end lift at high speed.
Another distinguishable feature were the driveshaft configuration. The earliest cars were fitted with an open Hotchkiss-style normal U-joint and driveshaft setup. This setup, if not properly aligned, caused vibration. Ferrari therefore switched to a driveshaft and constant velocity (CV) joint setup with a center bearing (referred to as the 'interim' setup).
This particular example is an 'interim' car with a lightweight alloy body, long-nose and six carburetors.
Completed in early fall of 1965, Ferrari 275 GTB 6C number 07933 appears to be only the second Long Nose 275 GTB to be fitted with an all-aluminum body and was originally painted Argento. Ferrari showed this successor to the 250 Series at the Paris Salon in 1964 and while it's Colombo two-cam, 3.3-liter V-12 was familiar, and its layout was new. The Ferrari 275 GTB was the first road-going Ferrari to have an independent rear suspension as well as a rear-mounted transaxle. It was available starting in 1965 as the 275 GTB coupe and the 275 GTS convertible, the latter having entirely different body work from the coupe. The GTBs typically had 280 horsepower motors while the convertibles delivered 260 horsepower. A six Weber 40 DCN 9 carburetors 300 horsepower state-of-tune was available in both cars as well. It was first sold to Luigi Chinetti in Glen Cove, New York, on October 22nd of 1965. It was sold the following month to Judge Samuel Leibowitz. In May of 1966 it was passed by Chinetti to Dick Gilberti Motors of Reading, Pennsylvania.
In the 1970s, it was acquired by Gerald Bowes and would remain in his care for most of the decade. In 1979, it was sold to Phil Tegtmeier, also of Villanova, who would maintain it for nearly two decades before selling it to the local Porsche dealer in 1998. After being advertised several times in 1999, it was sold to Craig Zinn.
By 2002 the car was owned by E.J. Van Kouwen, a Dutch owner who passed it later that year to Guus Bierman, who registered it as AL-06-064. Mr. Bierman exhibited the car at the Uwe Meissner Modena Motorsport Track Days at the Nürburgring in July 2003, and is believed to have retained it until 2006, when it was sold to Mario Bernardi of Germany. Two years later the Ferrari was again sold to Andreas Schlawicke, from whom it was acquired by the current owner in 2010.
Since that time, the car has been driven on several events, including the XXIII Tour Auto Optic 2000 in both 2013 and 2014, and several rallies in South America. After this, a full cosmetic restoration was commissioned, including the correct finish of Argento, as was used in 1965, with a new Blu leather interior. In its restored form it was shown at the XXV Palm Beach Cavallino Classic in 2016.
