1986 Porsche 962 Navigation
The 22nd customer 962 chassis was constructed by Porsche and delivered to Dyson Racing for the 1986 IMSA racing season to be campaigned in the RC Cola livery. The first race outing was Watkins Glen in June of 1986 which ended in disaster as it crashed after qualifying 6th and posted a DNF. The chassis was determined to be beyond repair and in accordance with Porsche Motorsport practice, a replacement monocoque was constructed. The Porsche factory-authorized the 962-122 serial number plate to be affixed by an authorized vendor of the replacement chassis. The new chassis is this chassis, recorded all the remaining race history including overall wins at Road Atlanta and Road America. The original chassis has subsequently undergone repair and has appeared at various historic events but the race history belongs to the chassis displayed here. The car was totally restored in 1993 and has remained in the current owner's possession since. John O'Steen has driven the car in recent events.
The replacement tub made its racing debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring where it was driven by 1983 Le Mans winner Vern Schuppan and Price Cobb. The pair qualified in 3rd behind the pacesetting Holbert Racing 962 of Al Holbert and Chip Robinson and the Bayside Disposal Racing car driven by Jochen Mass and Bobby Rahal. Schuppan and Cobb were running strong until an accident eliminated them from the race before half distance.
Repairs were made and the 962 raced at the next round of the championship at the Road Atlanta 500 KM in mid-April. Briton James Weaver joined Price Cobb in 962-122 on this occasion, and they qualified the car in 4th place for the 500-kilometer race. During the race, they led the way for a Porsche cleans weep of the first five places. Later that month, team owner Dyson joined Cobb in 962-122 at Riverside, qualifying in 4th place less than a tenth of a second behind Holbert/Robinson. The Dyson squad finished the race exactly as they had started, while the Holbert 962 took 2nd behind the victorious Group 44 Jaguar XJR-7 of Hurley Haywood and John Morton.
In early May at Laguna Seca, the car took pole position but finished in 20th place. In late May at Lime Rock, Holbert drove the 962 to victory solo in the 150-lap race. Weaver and Cobb suffered a costly retirement at the Mid-Ohio 500 KM, albeit remaining classified 13th. Cobb drove solo to 3rd and 2nd place finishes at Portland and Sears Point, respectively, and a long-overdue second victory of the season came the team's way at Road America.
Cobb/Dumfries finished 10th at San Antonio and Dyson/Dumfries finished 7th at Columbus. Cobb finished 5th in the final round of the championship at Del Mar in California. This proved to be 962-122's competitive swansong.
Cobb's performance in 962-122 earned him as Championship runner-up to Holbert Racing. At the end of the 1987 IMSA season, 962-122 was retired from competition by Dyson Racing and in 1989 was sold via Gunnar Racing to the current caretaker, who has remained its proud custodian ever since.
In 1993, the vehicle received a complete mechanical and cosmetic restoration performed by former Holbert Racing employee Bob Russo. The car has since competed in several prestigious events, including the 2011 and 2015 Rennsport Reunions, where it was driven by two-time Sebring 12 Hours podium finisher and Le Mans class winner John O'Steen. More recently, it has been driven by Skylar Robinson. In 2016, Skylar competed in both the 24 Minutes of Daytona and the Monterey Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca, the latter resulting in 2nd place in the combined Group C/IMSA GTO/GTP race behind another Porsche 962. In 2018 at the Rennsport Reunion, the car was driven by the current owner and Skylar Robinson. Since that time, the car has received further mechanical restoration by Bob Russo. This has included the installation of a fresh Porsche Motorsport North America-built engine, a brake system overhaul, and a complete chassis rebuild.
