1964 Porsche 356 Carrera 2 Coupe

The Carrera moniker came from the Carrera Panamericana, the Mexican road race where Porsche scored several early victories. Porsche named all of their Ernest Furhmann designed Volkswagen based four-cam racing engines after this event. Furhmann was then tasked with designing the new twin cam flat four, and he ensured it would fit in the 356 shell, because he wanted one for his personal car. The Type 547 engine was first developed as a 1.5 liter engine. The model 550 was the first pure Porsche race car to receive that engine. It produced 122 horsepower initially and went on to power Porsches well into the 1960's.

The basic design is a blood decedent of the original Fiat 12 engine that powered the 1948 Cisitalia Grand Prix Car which Fuhrmann helped to design. The fee for that design project provided the funds needed to release Dr. Porsche from military prison in France.

As for Mr. Furhmann, he ultimately became the President of Porsche and yes, he did get a Carrera engine for his personal 356.
