Mark Donohue stated, ...'we built a car as perfectly as we knew how. It was a fabulous car.' The record shows he was right: the only 1971 Trans-Am Javelin constructed by Penske Racing is the culmination of the team's Trans-Am expertise. Along the way, they somehow got the calipers for the Porsche 917/10 Can-Am racer homologated as Javelin Parts!
This is the AMC Javelin which Penske Racing built and raced in the 1971 Trans-Am series. Mark Donahue led the development and drove it throughout the 1971 season. This is the only Penske Racing AMC Javelin team car built for the 1971 season as Mark believed 'they had learned enough about durability and performance so that one strong car was all we needed to win the championship in 1971.' They went back to the shop, started with a new bare chassis tub, and built a new car as perfectly as they knew how. It dominated the 1971 season, winning seven of nine races, and won the Trans-Am Championship (Penske's third Trans-Am title in five years). This is the last Trans-Am car raced by Mark Donohue. It was sold to Bill Collins after the 1971 season and continued to run in the Trams-Am Series. In 1976, Jocko Maggiacomo won the 1976 SCCA Trans-Am Championship Category 1 in this Javelin. Having won the final championship year of what many consider the 'glory years of Trans-Am' and then a second Trans-Am championship five years later this Javelin holds a special place in America racing history.
