1965 DeTomaso P70 Sport 1000

The Shelby DeTomaso P70 Can Am racer started as a joint venture between Cobra creator Carroll Shelby, American Peter Brock who styled it and Italian coachbuilder Fantuzzi which made the alloy bodywork. DeTomaso designed the backbone chassis and was meant to develop a seven-liter version of the Ford's small block V8 for the P70 to be raced in the United States. The venture had started in 1964 when Shelby gave Brock a note on hotel Real-Fini headed paper saying: 'Peter: put body on this and have it done in one week. Will call this weekend. Shel.' Brock based the design on the second Shelby-built Lang Cooper sports racer. The design incorporated an adjustable rear airfoil to generate down force, something the Lang Cooper did not have. When Alessandro died in 2004, the car was sold by DeTomaso factory museum and the car was reassembled and restored in 2015. The 5-liter 8-cylinder engine develops 400 horsepower and the vehicle weighs 1455 pounds.
