The Series 90 Buick's shared their 136-inch 'C-body' chassis with Cadillac. In the years just prior to World War II, Cadillac executives lobbied GM brass to discontinue the 90 Series Buicks, arguing that they were taking away sales from its sister division. World War II took care of that, as the Series 90 (by then called the Limited) did not return following the conflict.

While all Buick's used mechanical brakes, the big Series 90s were equipped with Bendix vacuum power boosters. The year 1934 marked the first year that a radio was offered as an accessory, either factory or dealer installed. Despite having roll-up windows, Buick called the Model 98C a convertible phaeton, like other manufacturers preferring the added cachet of the phaeton moniker. A new offering for 1934 was the 98C four-door Convertible Phaeton with a built-in trunk. The Convertible Phaeton, available in both the 60 Series and 90 Series, came with standard dual side mounts. The 98C was Buick's second most expensive car at $2,145, behind the 90L Limousine. A mere 119 of these luxurious convertibles were built for domestic sales and 19 were for export in 1934. Fewer than six are believed to survive today.
