Baron Alex Von Faulkenhausen, the head of the BMW Werks, commissioned the creation of this vehicle as BMW's return to purpose built race cars. The 1961 700 RS was developed as a test bed race car. It showcased the technical expertise of the marque at the time and created significant brand identification with the public. The car was developed for and campaigned by Hans Stuck Sr. Stuck won three national championships in the car at age 60. He won the 1961 German, Swiss and Austrian Hill Climb Championships. One of two 700 RS's produced, the car uses a tube frame, constructed by Rainer Furchtenicht and Gottlieb Koch. The body was hand formed by Willi Huber. Power is provided by a 700cc two cylinder boxer engine producing 85 horsepower, designed by Ludwig Apfelbeck, coupled to a custom five-speed close ratio transaxle designed at BMW Werks.
