The 1993 version of the 928 was given an increase in displacement size from 5- to 5.4-liters. Horsepower and torque also increased, making this the most powerful Porsche V8 engine to date. 1994 would be the final year of production for the 928 GTS and was launched in late 1993 as a 1994 model. Just 119 examples were built with a base price of $82,250. The dual-overhead-cam eight-cylinder aluminum alloy engine produced 345 horsepower and was mated to either a 4-speed automatic or manual transmission.
The Porsche 928 was unveiled at the Geneva Salon in 1977 and was voted Car of the Year for 1978. Porsche intended the 928 as an up-market replacement for the 911, yet the rear-engined 911 would outlive the front-engine 928 hatchback. The Model 928 had aluminum doors, bonnet and front wings, impact resistant 'bumpers' made of color-matched plastic, and a 4.5-liter engine displacement. Transmission options included a five-speed transaxle gearbox or three-speed automatic. In 1979, the 928S was given a 4.6-liter engine and then in 1986 the model was further restyled and revised, becoming the 928 S4.
In 1989, Porsche introduced the more powerful 928 GT, which had a top speed of around 170 mph. The ultimate incarnation of the 928 was the GTS which was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1991.
This particular example was completed at the Zuffenhausen-based Porsche factory in September 1994 and was equipped for the American market. The first owner was Mr. Arch Lee Heady who registered the new 928 GTS in April of 1995 in Prospect, KY. The car was used sparingly and had covered less than 3,000 miles when it was purchased by the second owner in November 2001, a Houston, Texas-based enthusiast. By 2002, the car was in Massachusetts, but soon after relocated to Southern California where it remained with a Manhattan Beach-based enthusiast until 2010.
Currently, this is a highly original example that has covered less than 24,000 miles since new. It has its factory original livery of silver metallic over a grey interior. There is a five-speed manual transmission and four-wheel disc brakes.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2016
