1997 Porsche 993 Turbo S Navigation
The uprated 'S' models were based on the all-wheel-drive Turbo, and arrived in the penultimate year of the Type 933 production and was the creation of Porsche's Exclusiv Department. Power was from a Type M64/60 twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine that offered 424 horsepower (25 BHP over the standard Turbo) for the US market. The engine was mated to a Type G64/51 six-speed manual transaxle that sent power to all four wheels via the system developed by Porsche for its earlier Carrera 4 (Type 964) series.
In total, Porsche produced about 375 examples with just 183 of those going to the North American market in 1997.
The Type S had a larger pair of K-24 turbochargers than compared to the 'standard' turbo. It had a Bosch Motronic engine-management system that was tweaked to produce more power, as well as an additional oil cooler to handle the increased heat load. The Turbo's exhaust system was modified and was fitted with quadruple, round outlets - the standard Turbo had single exhaust tips, oval in form. The Turbo S had yellow-painted brake calipers, a biplane rear-deck spoiler called the 'Aerokit II', air inlets in the tops of the rear fenders, a Euro-market front spoiler with special brake cooling inlets, and matte-finish alloy wheels.
The interior featured leather seats and carbon-fiber trim. Special Turbo S trim scripts appeared on the engine cover, wheel center caps, interior carpeting, scuff plates, and steering-wheel hub cover. Under the front trunk lid was a carbon-fiber strut tower support bar.
Zero-to-sixty was accomplished in less than four seconds and had a top speed of 184 mph. Stopping power was provided by 12.68-inch power-assisted ventilated and cross-drilled multi-piston disc brakes located at all four corners.
This US-specification Turbo S was delivered new to its first owner in California on May 30, 1997, by Carlsen Porsche-Audi in Palo Alto, California. It was later purchased by David Sawyer of Farmington Hills, Michigan. It was acquired by the current caretaker in 2014. Currently, the odometer shows just 13,379 miles.
This Turbo S is fitted with many options including an electric sunroof, power windows, limited-slip differential, a Litronic high-intensity headlamp system, headlamp washers, cruise control, white-faced instruments, eight-way electrically-adjustable seats, self-dimming mirrors, rain sensor, full supple leather, an infrared remote entry and alarm and immobilizer system, a premium 10-speaker stereo with in-dash CD player, and a rear wiper. It is finished in the color of Forest Green Metallic with Cashmere Beige leather interior and matching floor mats. The original sticker price for this Turbo S exceeded $156,000. The car still retains its factory tool kit, jack, spare tire, and air compressor.By Daniel Vaughan | Apr 2016
