The Citroen 2CV, introduced in 1949, ranks alongside the Volkswagen Beetle, MINI, and Land Rover as one of the classic mass-produced vehicles of the post-war era. It was designed to offer basic transportation, and it outlived its humble beginnings, growing to attain cult status. The original engine was a 375cc air-cooled flat-twin unit that eventual grew to 602cc.
In 1958, Citroen began to build a special off-road utility version. Costs were kept in check by using existing engines modified with a larger carburetor. Separate transmissions were engaged with a single hydraulic system activated by a single clutch pedal. Rear wheel drive, front wheel drive, and four-wheel drive could be employed at will. These cars were hand built, most in France and some in Spain. They had an appearance similar to the standard CV, but most parts and panels were specific to the Sahara and stamped with model specific part numbers.
The last French-built 2CV left the Levallois factory in 1988, although production continued in Portugal for two more years.
This Citroen 2 CV Sahara 4x4 Bi Moteur was once part of the Dr. Mac Jones collection. It had been owned by a former Citroen employee and had its original engines, transmission, body and chassis parts. The exhaust system had been replaced.
Dr. Jones enjoyed the car for 14 years, using it often on his farm, before selling it to the present owner. The current owner treated the car to a sympathetic restoration with parts sourced from Citroen Concours of America, a former Citroen dealer who had purchased an extensive supply of OEM parts.By Daniel Vaughan | Jun 2016
